Bed Bug Abatement

Are you a landlord in Connecticut? Are you aware of Public Act No. 16-51 which was passed and is effective October 1, 2016? The Connecticut Legislature recently enacted a law that provides a timeline for inspection and treatment of bedbugs along with a delineation of responsibilities and obligations of landlords and tenants.

Upon first receiving notification (oral or written) regarding bed bugs a landlord has five days to inspect the premises. Once inspected the landlord has two days to provide written notice stating whether or not the unit is infested. If the unit is infested then you have five days from the inspection to treat the unit.

In addition to the new timeline, the legislature also provided under section (d)(2) an avenue to get an order from the court in the situation where a tenant is not complying with your notices or failing to allow access.
